How should I clean my amber jewellery?

You’ve picked up your first stunning Treestem piece, like our fan-favourite gold Yggdrasil earrings, but you want to know how to maintain that elegant, natural beauty? Look no further than these jewellery care tips.

First of all, that spectacular gem of the amber itself? That’s what is giving the piece the pop of colour that makes you stand out, however unlike other gemstones or crystals, amber is not a kind of rock. It’s actually fossilised tree resin from millions of years ago. Harsh chemicals as well as the trending ultrasonic cleaning method are best to be avoided, as amber can be very porous.

The best way to clean debris and dust off your amber, is also the simplest. Just warm water and a clean cloth (although a specialist polishing cloth would be better) will work wonders on your piece and restore its natural shine. A top-tip for gemstone care is also to use a neutral oil, like olive oil, as a way of polishing it, simply drip a small amount on and buff it out.

And how to clean 925 silver or gold-plate?

Maintaining the shine on your metals is just as important as the gemstones themselves.

For jewellery using 925 sterling silver like our elegant honeycomb bracelet, make sure you are using the right silver care method, it’s really important to keep that everlasting shine.

Tarnishing is common with silver jewellery as it is exposed to the air, luckily it` does not damage the metal and removing tarnishes is very quick and easy. Again, the simplest methods are the best, a clean cloth and some mild washing-up liquid will have it looking brand new in no time.

For anything gold-plated, a little more care needs to be taken as any abrasive chemicals can damage the gold-plating. As a result, it is best to maintain regular cleaning, use a polishing cloth and avoid cleaning chemicals.

Tips for long-term jewellery care

When it comes to caring for your jewellery long-term, prevention is key.

One of the biggest culprits of tarnishing or damage is cosmetics. Avoid applying makeup and perfumes while wearing pieces, especially those with gemstones like amber. It can absorb oils or chemicals, so it is best to leave them off until everything is dry to prevent discolouration or dulling. It's best to always remove your jewellery before showering, swimming, or doing household chores to avoid harsh chemicals from these activities too.

How about jewellery storage?

Another tip for long-term jewellery care is the way it is stored. Metals like silver react with the air, so purchasing a dedicated box can prolong the shine, while helping prevent gemstone scratches too.

There are a vast amount of jewellery storage options available, from simple trays and boxes to unique designer cases. Trays are a great budget option for organisation, although the best option for storing jewellery across all budgets is a jewellery box.

Using a box is the most effective method for avoiding silver tarnishing, as it is less exposed to the air, and preventing gemstone scratches with the soft interior in case they are knocked around.

Treestem ships all pieces in our very own designed box, with a soft foam interior to ensure your pieces arrive in perfect condition. We recommend keeping the box to ensure you are following these storage tips, and maintaining the quality of our pieces!

Hi there, my name is Tristan and I’m the owner and founder of Treestem Fashion!

I've been fascinated by jewellery from a young age, loving how basic materials can be transformed into beautiful pieces. One of my favourite colours is orange, which is why I'm drawn to Baltic Amber as the main gemstone used in my collection.

The warmth and richness of amber resonate with me, reflecting both my personal taste and the unique style of my collection.
