Introduction
Previously, we’ve discussed how Amber has been used throughout art history, but what myths mention Baltic Amber? How did ancient civilisations view amber as a unique gemstone? Many of our products showcase ancient mythological symbols, so here we will explore these stories!
Greek Mythology: Tears of the Gods
In ancient Greece, one amber mythology legend was the story of Phaethon, son of Helios, the sun god. After a disastrous attempt at challenging his father and trying to drive Helios’ sun chariot, Phaethon was struck down by Zeus.
His body then fell into the Eridanus River, a mythological river said to be full of amber in Northern Europe (unknowingly the Baltic). His grieving sisters wept into the water, creating amber.
For the ancient Greeks, this myth highlights amber’s spirituality and association of amber with grief, mourning, and the power of the divine. Check out our amber trail bracelet, an elegant piece with drops of amber too!
What did Amber represent to the Baltics?
Strangely enough, showing the connection human societies can have over great distances and even longer times, other societies have shown great interest in Baltic amber and created similar origin stories.
In the Baltics, amber mythology is often associated with the sea goddess Jūratė. According to legend, Jūratė fell in love with a mortal fisherman. When the gods discovered their love, they punished the fisherman by turning him into a pike. Jūratė, heartbroken, wept and her tears transformed into amber, which to this day still washes up on the shores.
Norse stories about amber mythology also connect amber to the divine. Freya, the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, is often linked to amber. Her tears, shed for her lost lover, are said to have transformed into amber. If Norse mythology is your thing, check out our yggdrasil earrings for your next stunning piece.
Zodiac signs colours and stones
In more modern day spirituality, zodiac signs are a popular amalgamation of a wide variety of historical beliefs, fortunately, amber's spiritual properties fit perfectly in between.
Amber jewellery is the perfect colour match for any fire zodiac sign: Leo, Sagittarius and Aries. The fiery hues and warmth of amber, as well as the mythological connections to stories related to gods and the sun mean any fire sign would benefit from adding amber jewellery as a pop of colour into their lives.
And what does amber represent for Earth zodiac signs?
As amber is a fossilised resin, not a rare rock or gem, amber’s spiritual properties link well with the Earth zodiac signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. These signs tend to be more grounded and practical, associating themselves deeper with nature. Amber jewellery can generate a lot of meaning to an Earth sign as a result, being a natural element from ancient trees.
Taureans, known for their love of beauty and luxury, might find particular appeal in amber's warm, golden hue. Virgos, with their discerning eye and appreciation for quality, may appreciate amber's intricate details and historical significance. Capricorns, valuing tradition and stability, could connect with amber's timeless allure and its association with ancient civilizations.
